Lauran Hibberd looks on the bright side of lockdown: "Maybe it will all come up Milhouse"

Lauran Hibberd is a firm fave here at Dork HQ. Her witty and irreverent take on slacker-pop can brighten up even the bleakest of days - which is pretty handy, given everything feels pretty bloody miserable at the moment. Even her new tune 'Old Nudes' - which is about a proper arsehat, 'btw' - is brimming with fun. Best take a leaf out of her book then and spend lockdown playing with dogs, watching Game of Thrones, and turning up for Dork's new online festival, Homeschool. But we would say that, wouldn't we?

Hi Lauran! How’s it going? Are you self-isolating at the mo?

Yo Dork!! I’m all good thanks; I’m at home self-isolating with my parents and my two dogs. I can’t decide who is better company at the moment; I have been having some long chats with the neighbours over the fence though. Paul next door sure does have some stories!

What are you spending your days doing, other than working on live sessions for demanding music mags?

That’s the good stuff! Been oddly creative actually, have written a song a day since day dot so I have over two albums worth of material now, haha! I’ve also been planning this new release, and the second EP, as well as filming a home music video and reading a lot. I also started watching Game of Thrones. I never watched it when it was all everyone was talking about, so I’m late to the party but loving it for sure.

Have you learnt any skills during the lockdown period?

I’m so much better at cooking now! My parents are key workers so have been so busy, in which time I have morphed into the domestic goddess I never knew I could be. Still can’t iron though, can’t get my head around it. I’ve also been practising piano every day, and can finally play more than one Coldplay song.

What about fun indoor hobbies, do you have any you’d recommend?

Well, I’ve been playing a lot of Sims 4 on Xbox as well, so my life on there is thriving. I’ve also been playing a lot of board games, a bit of scrabble, and a lot of Zoom quizzes. Other than that, picking up an instrument or writing feels like my go-to.

You must’ve had a lot of live sets cancelled, when do you think gigs n that will start happening again? Will we be allowed to go to the pub again before 2021?

Yes, sad times! I really hope things can pick up for the winter, I’d like to think from October onwards I can get back on a stage, but it’s so difficult to say. Very sad to be missing festival season... but everything is up in the air so who knows. Maybe it will all come up Milhouse. And I can only pray for the pubs!! What’s summer without a pint?

Lauran Hibberd

Tell us about your new tune ‘Old Nudes’, how did the video come together?
Old Nudes is my most Weezer influenced track to date, it’s all about hating someone you once loved and the collateral damage of a ‘nude’ picture. It resents and laughs at itself. It feels young and naked to me, haha! The video came together in isolation, it made sense to film it at home on a webcam not only because I’m not allowed out
but because that’ the environment in which we idolise ourselves for a split second at midnight – before we live to regret it.

And it’s based on a true story?

Regrettably yes. Not even ashamed (just a little bit). We were all young once. The song lyrically explains my tragedy exactly, but I also end up winning. Girls will always have things over guys, and guys will always think they have something over girls. It was more about overcoming my own anxieties as opposed to being wronged, I suppose.

Has anyone ever written a song about you? That you know of, obvs.

That would be my dream, I am the sort of person that could ruin someone’s life enough to have them write about it traumatically afterwards. Having only ever been out with musicians, my stakes are high. I have heard a couple of lyrics from a chosen few before and thought, will probably just bury my head in the sand now and pretend that’s not about me.

S
o what’s next then, what’s the plan? Do you have more new material on the way?
I’m releasing my second EP later this year, so am filtering tracks out in the lead up to that so you can expect lots more new music from me and my second little body of work really. I’m also currently writing my debut album, so ya know – no big deal.

Lauran Hibberd's single 'Old Nudes' is out now. She's taking part in new online festival Homeschool too, which runs from 8th-10th May - visit homeschoolfest.com for details.
