Remember the way it felt to hear Kurt Cobain’s tangled ‘yeaaaah’ on ‘Lithium’ for the first time? That half-growled, half-screamed bastard of a vocal? Well, get ready to feel that way again. The Cribs’ ‘What Have You Done For Me?’ is a ‘Lithium’ grade banger.

We’ve always known that The Cribs are actually Punk Rock As Hell, but there’s no denying they’re stepping things up in the lead up to ‘24/7 Rock Star Shit’. ‘What Have You Done For Me?’ crackles with frustration and resentment, fizzing over as Ryan Jarman howls out the main refrain. It’s not all spit and teeth-grinding though - underneath Ryan’s choppy guitar and Ross’s crashing cymbals is a quietly melodic thread.

The Cribs know when they’re on to a good thing, so they’ve let that small spark grow ever more incendiary to set the tinder box of chords and lyrics on fire. ‘What Have You Done For Me?’ is the Jarmans at their unrestricted best.
