When your mum is Neneh Cherry and Cameron McVey (producer for Massive Attack) is your dad, you’re born with some serious shoes to fill. But Mabel is having no trouble living up to her family’s musical street cred.
Since being shortlisted for numerous ‘ones-to-watch’ lists at the start of the year, the London talent has toured with Years & Years (including a show at Wembley Arena) and appeared on SBTRKT’s album. But it’s the cool and catchy ‘Thinking of You’ that sets her on the path to future stardom.
“Relationships with cities are similar to relationships with people... being away from both can really make you appreciate what you have,” she says of the string-led track, which showcases her Jessie Ware-tinged vocal effortlessly.
“Been away for a couple of weeks, could be more ‘coz I lost track of time” she sings in lovesick fashion over soft synth flourishes. Following soulful delights ‘My Boy My Town’ and ‘Know Me Better’, ‘Thinking of You’ is another slice of R&B perfection from the rising star. Ben Jolley
