If there’s one thing IDLES like to do, it’s put the world to rights. Luckily for us, they tend to make absolute bangers at the same time. New cut ‘Great’ is no exception, this time taking aim at the people that voted Brexit for all the wrong reasons.
‘Blighty wants her blue passport / Not quite sure what the union’s for /Burning bridges and closing doors’. It’s not exactly subtle, all the more powerful for the lack of window dressing. The sarcastic spelt out chorus of ‘G R E A T’ is another highlight, underlining the sheer sense of embarrassment the band feel at the state of it all.
Honestly, listening to IDLES is unlikely to change a xenophobe’s mind, but we doubt that was ever their aim. They’re a group with a firm set of beliefs that they’ve never been shy of shouting about, and ‘Great’ follows very firmly in that pattern.
With a lot of bands, that would put them in the camp of ‘dull and political’, but the magic of IDLES is the intelligence of the lyrics, the brilliance of the songs themselves, and the sense that if you saw them in the street they’d buy you a pint and a packet of crisps, no matter what your political views were.
