Charli XCX and Troye Sivan - 1999
Published: 10:40 am, October 08, 2018Words: Jake Hawkes.

Picture the scene: It's 1999, the euro has just been established, Britney Spears is riding high after the release of ‘...Baby One More Time' and you're seven years old. Or rather, you would be seven years old if you were Charli XCX, which you probably aren't (but if you are, hi Charli!).

In case you're finding that scenario hard to picture, Charli and Troye Sivan's new single ‘1999' does a good job of filling in the blanks and gives an insight into what it was that made the late 90s so great.

With lyrics about Britney, Michael Jackson and air guitar on the roof, ‘1999' is a shamelessly nostalgic track, complete with keys that sound as if they've been lifted straight from a classic Vengaboys banger.

It's no secret that music is having a bit of a 90s moment right now, and this is that moment's crowning glory, with both Troye and Charli revelling in the musical trends and slightly dubious fashion influences that come along with it.

If 2018 has got you down and you want to lose yourself in simpler times, ‘1999' is definitely the track for you. Wearing a bucket hat and cat-eye sunglasses while you listen is optional, but encouraged.

Feelin' hypersonic: Sam Fender

Sam Fender is a man on a mission. Already beating current ‘biggest noise on the block’ Lewis Capaldi to a Brit Award, as his debut album nears its much-anticipated arrival, the sky really is the limit for an artist not short of stuff to say.
