It’s five years since Anna Calvi’s last full-length, 2013’s ‘One Breath’. Whatever she’s been saving up since, it’s potent stuff.

When she says she’s “waited five years for this moment”, the raw thrust of first track back ‘Don’t Beat the Girl Out of My Boy’ makes perfect sense. Immediate but considered, powerful but deliberate, it’s a stunning return which makes an artist already at the top of her field feel fresher and more essential than ever before.

Strident and firm, there’s a hint of Karen O’s world class vamp to the razor sharp, delicately wielded chorus. Like a well flexed muscle, little is put on just for show - everything is about delivering that killer blow.

With a primal howl, we’d perhaps forgotten just how stunningly effective Anna Calvi could be. We won’t need reminding again.
